Outreach Efforts and Place-based History at SURF

You know all about the future research set to take place nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility—but what is going on above ground in Lead and the surrounding community? Come to learn more about SURF’s outreach team and their work ranging from STEM-based learning experiences for K-12 students across South Dakota to communicating world-leading research to a lay audience. The talk will also highlight a contemporary issue central to the indigenous communities of the Black Hills—land loss and reclamation. What policies and practices were utilized to displace indigenous peoples from their homelands? How were reservations established? What is the land back movement? Find answers to these questions and feel free to come with your own as we explore this complex topic to build a greater understanding of the Black Hills region.
