Alvin Tollestrup has joined the Fermilab staff as a physicist in the Energy Doubler/Saver Group. Tollestrup also will assume responsibility for a new group in the Research Division’s Department of Research Services. That group will be responsible for carrying on research and development on electronic detectors and data acquisition techniques.

Dr. R. R. Wilson, Laboratory Director, said a Colliding Detector Facility (CDF) will replace the former Colliding Beam Experiments department. […] Alvin Tollestrup will head the new department, with Jim Walker serving asdeputy head and Peter Mcintyre as assistant head.
FermiNews, July 22, 1982: Ground broken for collider
Alvin Tollestrup of the Collider Detector Facility turned the first shovel
of dirt with a golden shovel originally used at the groundbreaking of the Fermilab linac in 1969. Andy Mravca of DOE, Leon Lederman, Fred Mills of the Antiproton Source Group, Wayne Nestander of the Tevatron Construction Group, and Jus Maggio followed.

Fermilab’s Tevatron continues to attract accolades as one of the premier technological accomplishments of its time. At a ceremony in the East Room of the White House on the afternoon of October 18, 1989, President George Bush presented the 1989 National Medal of Technology to Helen T. Edwards, Richard A. Lundy, J. Richie Orr, and Alvin V. Tollestrup for their work in the design, construction, and initial operation of Fermilab’s Tevatron accelerator.
