Based in Boston, he directs the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiverseseries.org\/\">Multiverse Concert Series<\/a>, a project that combines music and science in live performance. His lifelong passion for science began with his father, Dr. Roger Ibbett, who is a research chemist in Nottingham, UK.<\/p>\n<p>David composes electrosymphonic music: a fusion of classical and electronic styles that interweaves influences from songs, symphonies, pop, rock and electronica. Musical strands are met with inspiration from the work of scientists: sonified data, musical metaphors for scientific concepts, and experimental sound and images from contemporary research.<\/p>\n<p>In all projects, David seeks a deep collaboration with musicians, scientists, artists and performers. He has worked with with physicists (<a href=\"https:\/\/as.nyu.edu\/content\/nyu-as\/as\/faculty\/matthew-kleban.html\">Dr. Mathew Kleban, NYU<\/a>), biologists (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bio.brandeis.edu\/garritylab\/Welcome.html\">Dr. Paul Garrity, Brandeis<\/a>), engineers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiverseseries.org\/phenomena-of-growth\">Dr. Irmgard Bischofberger, MIT<\/a>), sociologists (<a href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.jhu.edu\/directory\/clara-han\/\">Dr. Clara Han, Johns Hopkins<\/a>) and oceanographers (<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/\">Dr. Sarah Davies, BU<\/a>). For these concerts, David has composed a series of works for piano and electronics, including<a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidibbett.com\/phenomena-of-growth\"> Phenomena of Growth (2017)<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidibbett.com\/floods-and-tears\"> Floods and Tears (2018)<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiverseseries.org\/cellulardance\"> Cellular Dance [2019]<\/a> a full length ballet with cell biologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umb.edu\/academics\/csm\/faculty_staff\/alexey_veraksa\">Dr. Alexey Veraksa of UMass Boston<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, he will release Octave of Light: an album celebrating advances in exoplanet science inspired by the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/\">Roy Gould, Harvard Center for Astrophysics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David studied at Clare College Cambridge with Giles Swayne, the Guildhall School of Music &amp; Drama with Julian Anderson, and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham (UK) with Jonty Harrison and Scott Wilson. His passion for electronic music began in 2008 when he undertook a residency at the Aldeburgh Music Festival with Jonathan Harvey \u2013 an inspirational teacher and pioneer in the field. In 2014 he moved from London to Boston, USA, where he lives with his wife Sarah and son Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>In tandem with his composing, David mentors young composers at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibbettmusic.com\/\"> Ibbett Music<\/a>, is Composition Coordinator at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ymsboston.com\/home\"> Yamaha Music School of Boston<\/a>, and a Visiting Professor at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpi.edu\/\"> Worcester Polytechnic Institute<\/a>.
